Eternal Life

Go in through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to [eternal] destruction and those who go in through it are many. How narrow the gate and hard the way that leads to [eternal] life, and those who find it are few (Mt. 7:13, 14).

What must I do to have eternal life? Jesus was asked that and the answer was: You shall love God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind; and your neighbor as yourself (Lk. 10:27). Do I love God this much? My neighbor? Do I even plan to some day? Or, do I think perhaps Jesus didn't mean it? The first step in love is to communicate. Do I pray to God daily? One of the most beneficial and least boring types of prayer is meditation (focused thinking). Could I not meditate on Christ's coming to us, his suffering (agony, scourging, bearing his cross, crucifixion), his triumph (resurrection, ascension) for 5-10 minutes a day to start? Growth is easy once you start. Getting started is the hardest thing.

What if we leave this world loving God, but not quite "with all our heart..."? Mercifully, God allows us to be purified of our obstacles to love: attachment to sin and selfishness. Painful? Very, but well worth it.

If we are to love God we must do what He told us to do: "Keep holy the Lord's day," "Do this in memory of me," [Sunday Mass]; "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood you have no [eternal] life in you" [worthy reception of Eucharist]; and avoid what He told us not to do: "...neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor sodomites, nor thieves... nor drunkards... will inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Cor 6:9, 10). Our merciful God will forgive all our sins if we repent and confess them (1 Jn 1:7-9)). If...

Only by God's grace can we avoid sin-and effort.

And, there are 100 other things we must do to love God and neighbor. We can discover these and find inspiration, by reading Scripture and books on the saints. (See recommended list at www.cfalive.org.)

Loving God and others: the only way to eternal life.
